Im doing a Personal Injury Claim for a car accident i was in and the solisitors want my National Insurance no.

Its a long story but my national insurance no is still in my old name at my old address. Its a long story but i don't want to change it just yet. Why do the solisitors want it, what will they do with it and should i change my details with inland rev or wont they check my details with them?
