Should I dye my hair black?

I have pale skin but am greek cypriot so have dark eyebrows and eyes. My closest skin/eye colour resemblance that I can think of is Cheryl Cole. My natural colour is a darkish chestnut brown. I've had blonde highlights in the past and my hairdresser said I suited it better darker but my mum disagreed and thinks black will be too harsh.
