96 sable problems hard to start and runs bad?

Sometimes it starts fine but then at times I have to hold the gas pedal all the way down to start. then it shakes when i come to a stop. no smoke coming from tailpipe at any time. the car doesn't pick up well, i put the pedal all the way down and there is no acceleration difference. the rpm's raise but not the speed.
