Why would a patient need more frequent Procrit injections?

My dad is 90 and has been in kidney failure for 7 years. He has recently had to increase the number of Procrit injections he receives from 1 a month to weekly. He was told it would only be until his hemoglobin stabilizes again but he is going into his 5th week with not indication that they will stop any time soon. Does this mean that he is likely going down hill to the point that he probably does not have much more time?
